Porsche 918 RSR World Premiere of the Porsche 918 RSR in Detroit Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. hc F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, opened the North American International Auto Show today with the World Premiere of the Porsche 918 RSR. Commenting on the first appearance of the sports car manufacturer from Stuttgart at the Detroit show since 2007, Matthias Mueller, President and CEO of Porsche AG said: “We are back in Detroit with a clear message: Porsche further extends its competencies when it comes to performance and efficiency. The Porsche 918 RSR impressively demonstrates the passion of our engineers and designers for developing the world’s most advanced and best looking sports cars.” This auto show in the traditional venue of Detroit, nicknamed “The Motor City”, is regarded as a leading international forum for trends and opinions at the beginning of the year. In this setting Matthias Mueller underlined the growing demand for Porsche, not only in the US, but also on a worldwide basis. The momentum on the product front resulted in an order intake by the end of last year that increased by nearly 50 percent to more than 110000 vehicles. Customer deliveries for the calendar year were up over 25 percent to more than 95.000 cars. After the huge success enjoyed by the 458 Italia, a car that combines performance and sportiness with maximum efficiency to the extent that it boasts class-leading emissions and specific power output 307 g/km of CO2 and 127hp/litre respectively – Ferrari is showcasing two major additions to its green credentials at the Geneva Motor Show. The first of these is the Stop & Start system sported by the Ferrari California, an industry first on a high-performance sports car, while the second is the HY-KERS, a vettura laboratorio (experimental vehicle) which reveals to the public for the first time the hybrid solutions being developed by Maranellos engineers. Introduced with effect from March for the Ferrari California, the Stop & Start System cuts both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 6 per cent in the ECE + EUDC combined cycle, emitting around just 280 g/km, an excellent value for a high performance naturally-aspirated sports car. The Stop & Start cuts in virtually instantaneously – just 230 milliseconds, a time so fast that the driver barely notices the engine restarting. This solution is a further step in Ferraris on-going strategy to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by working 360 degrees on all aspects of the cars. For example the Ferrari Californias direct-injection V8 boasts very low levels of friction. In addition to an early video reveal, we were invited to get some seat time in a prototype of the 1M, leaving us with just the final production-spec images and details in the world of the unknown. Well, wait no more — BMW has officially taken the wraps off of its hot new 1 Series, and while we’re still very eager to put this sporty coupe through its paces, we can’t help but wish for just a teensy bit more… oomph. Let’s start with power. The 1 Series M Coupe uses BMW’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, and while early estimates had the car pumping out as much as 350 horsepower, the final numbers are: 335 hp and 332 pound-feet of torque — exactly what you get out of this engine in the current Z4 sDrive35is. The car’s ECU has an overboost function that provides an additional 37 lb-ft of twist at full tilt, and with your foot pressed hard into the right pedal, 0-60 will happen in just 4.7 seconds.
